Session DescriptionThe science of improvement emphasizes creation of a clear goal (aim), with rapid-cycle improvement, learning from small test of changes, education of front-line staff, with support from senior leadership. The methodology of science of improvement, traced back to W. Edward Deming (1900-1993) includes identification of a measurable aim, steps designed to reach the aim, implementation of “small tests of change”, utilization of the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, and learning from mistakes to set the stage for steps towards positive change. During the last 3 years, Oklahoma Hospital Association Hospital Engagement Network (OHA HEN) staff has worked with 51 Oklahoma hospital quality leaders, to apply the steps of the science of improvement to quality initiatives in 11 areas of patient harm. The positive changes experienced by the journey of three OHA HEN hospitals through learning about and implementation of steps of the science of safety resulted in a measureable decrease in hospital-acquired harm and also significant cost savings for hospitals.
